This patient came to Newport Beach Dental Studio concerned about the appearance of her smile. Her teeth demonstrated significant wear and had a naturally yellow appearance that made her feel self-conscious. The World’s Thinnest Cosmetic Dental Veneer
UltraThineer is described by its manufacturer as the world’s thinnest cosmetic dental veneer. These restorations can measure under 100 microns — less than 0.1 millimeter — making them approximately comparable to the thickness of a human hair. That extremely thin profile is what makes a completely prepless treatment possible in appropriately selected cases. Rather than creating space by grinding away healthy enamel, the restoration is engineered to add an exceptionally thin layer of zirconia over the existing tooth surface. For patients who are strongly opposed to conventional veneer preparation, this technology creates another cosmetic option when their existing tooth position and anatomy permit an additive approach.3D-Printed Zirconia Veneer Technology
UltraThineer is fundamentally different from a conventional hand-layered or milled porcelain veneer. The restorations are fabricated from zirconia using advanced 3D-printing technology.
The manufacturing process uses Projection Micro Stereolithography, or PµSL, to produce extremely thin zirconia restorations with a high degree of dimensional precision. After printing, the restoration undergoes the appropriate processing and sintering to produce the definitive zirconia veneer.
This combination of micro-scale 3D printing and zirconia allows UltraThineer to achieve a thickness that would be difficult to reproduce consistently using more conventional ceramic manufacturing techniques.
Why a Prepless Approach?
The patient’s primary treatment preference was preservation. She wanted to improve her smile without having healthy tooth structure intentionally removed to create room for conventional veneers. Because UltraThineers are exceptionally thin, selected patients can receive the restorations without conventional veneer preparation. In this case, the patient’s existing anatomy allowed us to use a completely additive approach while addressing her concerns about color and wear. Rather than reducing the teeth first, the restorations were designed to work with the patient’s existing enamel and tooth position.The Advantage — and Limitation — of Being So Thin
The same property that makes UltraThineer so conservative also creates an important limitation. Because the restorations are exceptionally thin and the underlying teeth are not significantly prepared, we cannot completely redesign every tooth position or shape.
Traditional porcelain veneer treatment can provide greater freedom to modify projection, alignment, contour and overall tooth morphology when substantial changes are required.
UltraThineers are instead designed to work with the existing tooth architecture while adding minimal thickness. Proper case selection is therefore essential.

01 — Consultation, Scan & Records
The patient’s existing teeth, wear pattern and cosmetic goals were evaluated. Digital scans, clinical records and photographs were obtained so the 10 prepless restorations could be designed and fabricated.
Production of the UltraThineers required approximately three weeks.
02 — UltraThineer Delivery
The patient returned for delivery of all 10 UltraThineers. The individual zirconia restorations were evaluated and bonded, followed by careful finishing and removal of residual cement.
The complete delivery appointment took approximately four hours.
The patient’s occlusion was checked after delivery. Radiographs were also taken to confirm that no excess or residual cement remained around the restorations.

The restorations were bonded during a four-hour delivery visit, followed by occlusal evaluation and radiographs to confirm that residual cement had been removed. Most importantly, the patient’s primary treatment preference was respected: the cosmetic transformation was completed without intentionally shaving down her natural teeth.
