Solea Sleep Snoring Treatment in Newport Beach
If your snoring keeps your partner awake—or you are tired of hearing about it every morning—the first question should not simply be, “How do we make the noise stop?” We also want to understand why you are snoring.
At Newport Beach Dental Studio, Dr. Tai Ha offers Solea Sleep, a non-surgical laser application designed to reduce snoring associated with vibration of the soft palate.
The treatment takes only minutes for many patients, requires no incisions or stitches, and generally involves little to no downtime. More importantly, our dental sleep medicine background allows us to evaluate whether you appear to have uncomplicated snoring or whether your symptoms warrant evaluation for obstructive sleep apnea before we simply treat the sound.
What Is Solea Sleep?
Solea Sleep is an application of the Solea all-tissue CO₂ dental laser that is used to treat tissue within the soft palate.
For many people, part of the sound we recognize as snoring comes from relaxed soft-palate tissue vibrating as air passes through the upper airway during sleep.
During Solea Sleep treatment, controlled laser energy is delivered into collagen-rich tissue within the soft palate. The energy causes collagen fibers to contract and increases tissue stiffness. Firmer tissue can vibrate less as air moves past it, which may reduce the volume or frequency of palatal snoring.
How Does Laser Snoring Treatment Work?
Solea Sleep does not remove the soft palate and does not involve surgically cutting away tissue.
Instead, low-power laser energy is directed into deeper collagen-containing layers of the soft palate while preserving the superficial tissue. Heating causes changes within the collagen that result in contraction and increased stiffness.
The goal is straightforward: reduce the vibration of soft-palate tissue that contributes to snoring.
This is also why patient selection matters. If the primary source of someone’s snoring is nasal obstruction, tongue position, significant airway collapse, or another cause, treating the soft palate alone may not provide the desired improvement.
Before Treating Snoring, We Want to Rule Out Sleep Apnea
Snoring and obstructive sleep apnea are not the same condition.
Some people snore without having sleep apnea. However, loud or persistent snoring can also be one of the most recognizable signs of obstructive sleep apnea.
Treating the sound of snoring does not tell us whether breathing interruptions, oxygen drops, or sleep fragmentation are occurring during the night.
That distinction matters because Solea Sleep is intended to reduce snoring associated with soft-palate vibration. It is not a replacement for medically appropriate obstructive sleep apnea treatment.
Signs Your Snoring May Need a Sleep Apnea Evaluation
Need a Sleep Test? You May Be Able to Do It at Home
If your history suggests that obstructive sleep apnea should be evaluated before Solea Sleep treatment, you may not need to spend the night in a sleep laboratory.
Newport Beach Dental Studio has access to an FDA-cleared ring-based home sleep apnea testing system for appropriate adult patients. The device is worn while you sleep in your own bed and records physiologic information used as part of the sleep evaluation.
We work with medical sleep providers who can review and interpret the sleep-study data, establish the medical diagnosis, and recommend appropriate treatment when necessary.
If a home sleep study is negative, inconclusive, technically inadequate, or your medical history makes home testing inappropriate, an attended sleep study may still be recommended.
Already Had a Sleep Study Somewhere Else?
You do not need to repeat a sleep study simply because it was performed through another physician, hospital, sleep center, or home testing company.
Bring or send us a copy of your sleep-study report. We can review the information as part of your dental sleep consultation and determine what additional documentation or evaluation, if any, is appropriate.
If you have already been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea, our discussion will focus first on appropriate OSA management rather than treating snoring in isolation.
Who May Be a Good Candidate for Solea Sleep?
Solea Sleep is most logically considered when soft-palate vibration appears to be an important component of the snoring and there is no untreated sleep apnea that should take priority.
Solea Sleep May Be Worth Discussing If:
You have bothersome snoring, the soft palate appears to contribute to the vibration, you want a non-surgical treatment, and appropriate evaluation does not identify untreated OSA that requires different therapy.
Another Approach May Be Better If:
Your snoring is primarily related to nasal obstruction, tongue position, significant obesity, untreated obstructive sleep apnea, another sleep disorder, or anatomy that is unlikely to respond adequately to soft-palate treatment alone.
What Happens During Solea Sleep Treatment?
Does Solea Sleep Hurt?
Most patients tolerate Solea Sleep well. During treatment, patients may notice warmth or a mild sensation in the palate.
Minor throat or soft-tissue sensitivity can occur afterward but is generally temporary. There are no incisions, stitches, or traditional surgical wound associated with the procedure.
What Is Recovery Like?
One of the principal advantages of Solea Sleep is that it does not involve surgical removal of palatal tissue.
Most patients are able to speak, eat, drink, work, and continue their normal activities after leaving the office. Any temporary soreness or irritation tends to be considerably different from the recovery associated with an incisional soft-palate surgery.
How Long Does Solea Sleep Last?
Solea Sleep should not be considered a permanent alteration of the airway. Soft tissue and collagen continue to change with aging, weight changes, anatomy, sleep habits, and other factors.
Some patients maintain improvement for an extended period, while others may notice the snoring gradually return and choose to discuss repeat treatment.
Because individual response varies, we prefer to evaluate your actual result and symptoms rather than promise that treatment will last a specific number of months.
Does Solea Sleep Treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea?
No. We do not use Solea Sleep as a substitute for obstructive sleep apnea treatment.
OSA involves repeated narrowing or collapse of the upper airway during sleep. Proper treatment should address that airway obstruction and should be evaluated objectively.
For appropriate adults with physician-diagnosed obstructive sleep apnea, Dr. Ha also provides custom oral appliance therapy. These mandibular advancement devices hold the lower jaw in a controlled forward position during sleep to help maintain upper-airway space.
Our office works with sleep physicians for sleep-study interpretation, medical diagnosis, prescriptions, and letters of medical necessity when required. We can also submit qualifying oral appliance therapy to medical insurance according to the patient’s benefits and coverage requirements.
Solea Sleep vs. an Oral Sleep Appliance
These treatments serve different purposes and should not be presented as interchangeable.
Solea Sleep
Targets soft-palate tissue to reduce vibration associated with snoring. It is primarily a snoring treatment and is not intended to replace treatment for obstructive sleep apnea.
Mandibular Advancement Appliance
A custom oral appliance changes the position of the lower jaw during sleep to help maintain upper-airway space. It may be prescribed for appropriate adults with obstructive sleep apnea or primary snoring.
Why Treat Snoring at a Dental Sleep Medicine Office?
The value is not simply that we own a laser.
Dr. Ha combines Solea laser dentistry with dental sleep medicine, digital dental technology, sleep screening, access to home sleep apnea testing, physician coordination, and oral appliance therapy.
That gives us more than one option. If your problem appears to be uncomplicated palatal snoring, Solea Sleep may be reasonable. If the history raises concern for sleep apnea, we can help move the evaluation in that direction instead. If OSA has already been diagnosed and an oral appliance is appropriate, we can provide and manage that therapy.
The goal is to match the treatment to the problem rather than treating every patient who snores with the same device or procedure.
About the Solea Laser
Solea is an FDA-cleared CO₂ dental laser with cleared indications for treatment of oral soft tissue as well as other dental hard- and soft-tissue procedures.
Solea Sleep is an application of this technology in which controlled laser energy is used to tighten and stiffen collagen within soft-palate tissue to reduce vibration associated with snoring.
As with any dental or medical technology, having the device does not automatically make every patient a candidate. Diagnosis, patient selection, anatomy, symptoms, and realistic expectations remain important.
Frequently Asked Questions About Solea Sleep & Snoring
What is Solea Sleep?
Solea Sleep is a non-surgical application of the Solea CO₂ dental laser used to tighten and stiffen collagen-rich tissue within the soft palate. The goal is to reduce tissue vibration that contributes to palatal snoring.
Does Solea Sleep stop snoring completely?
Not necessarily. Snoring has multiple possible causes, and treatment response varies. Solea Sleep is intended to reduce snoring related to soft-palate vibration rather than guarantee elimination of every source of snoring.
Does Solea Sleep treat sleep apnea?
No. Solea Sleep should not replace medically appropriate obstructive sleep apnea treatment. If your symptoms suggest OSA, we recommend appropriate sleep evaluation and treatment rather than simply reducing the sound of snoring.
Do I need a sleep study before Solea Sleep?
Not every person who snores automatically needs the same testing, but persistent snoring accompanied by witnessed apneas, gasping, significant daytime sleepiness, morning headaches, frequent awakenings, or other concerning symptoms should be evaluated for sleep-disordered breathing.
Can I do a sleep test at home?
For appropriate adults, yes. Our office can help coordinate FDA-cleared ring-based home sleep apnea testing. The test is completed in your own bed and medically reviewed as part of the diagnostic process. Some patients still require an attended laboratory sleep study.
Who diagnoses sleep apnea?
Obstructive sleep apnea is a medical diagnosis. We work with medical sleep providers who can interpret sleep-study data, establish the diagnosis, and provide appropriate medical documentation and prescriptions when required.
I already have a sleep study. Can I bring it?
Yes. If you already completed testing through another physician, hospital, sleep center, or home testing company, bring us the report. You generally do not need to start over simply because the testing was performed elsewhere.
Does Solea Sleep require needles?
Injectable local anesthetic generally is not required for the Solea Sleep application. A topical anesthetic may be used for additional comfort or to reduce gagging or tissue sensitivity.
How long does the procedure take?
The laser portion of Solea Sleep treatment can be completed in only minutes for many patients. The overall appointment is longer because we also evaluate your symptoms, anatomy, candidacy, and treatment plan.
Is there downtime after Solea Sleep?
There are no incisions or stitches, and most patients return to their usual daily activities after treatment. Temporary soft-tissue or throat sensitivity may occur.
How long do the results last?
Duration varies between patients. The treatment does not permanently prevent the soft palate from changing over time, so repeat treatment may be considered if snoring gradually returns.
What if I have sleep apnea and still snore?
Persistent snoring does not necessarily mean your sleep apnea treatment has failed, but it deserves evaluation. If you already use CPAP or an oral appliance, we would want to understand your current treatment and objective sleep data before deciding whether an additional snoring treatment is appropriate.
Ready to Do Something About Your Snoring?
If snoring is disturbing your sleep or your partner’s sleep, schedule a consultation with Dr. Tai Ha at Newport Beach Dental Studio.
We can evaluate whether Solea Sleep makes sense for your type of snoring, determine whether sleep apnea should be investigated first, and discuss home sleep testing, oral appliance therapy, or other options when appropriate.
Solea Sleep is intended to reduce snoring associated with soft-palate vibration and is not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment of obstructive sleep apnea. Individual response varies. Home sleep apnea testing is not appropriate for every patient.
