The test gives us information that cannot be seen on an X-ray or measured with a periodontal probe alone. By evaluating specific periodontal bacteria in a saliva sample, we can use that information alongside your clinical examination, periodontal measurements, dental imaging, and medical history to help guide treatment and monitor your response to care.

What Is SimplyPerio Saliva Testing?

The mouth contains a complex community of bacteria often referred to as the oral microbiome. Many of these microorganisms are compatible with health, while others are associated with gingivitis, periodontal inflammation, bone loss, and progression of periodontal disease.

Traditional periodontal examinations tell us what has happened clinically. We measure gum-pocket depths, bleeding, recession, attachment loss, calculus, mobility, and bone levels. Saliva testing provides another piece of information by evaluating selected bacteria present within the patient’s oral environment.

SimplyPerio testing is non-invasive. A saliva sample is collected in our office and submitted to a laboratory for analysis. The resulting report can then be reviewed alongside your clinical findings.

Saliva Testing Does Not Replace a Periodontal Examination

A bacterial test alone cannot diagnose the severity of periodontal disease or determine how much bone or attachment has already been lost.

We use saliva testing as an adjunct to a complete clinical examination. The results are interpreted together with periodontal probing, bleeding, gum recession, dental X-rays, bone levels, existing dental work, medical history, and other risk factors.

This combination gives us a more complete picture than relying on any single measurement by itself.

Why Test the Bacteria Associated With Gum Disease?

Two patients can have similar-looking gums but very different periodontal histories and risk profiles. Saliva testing may provide useful additional information when gum disease continues to progress, repeatedly returns after treatment, or appears more severe than expected.

Bleeding or Inflamed Gums Persistent bleeding can indicate active gingival or periodontal inflammation that warrants further evaluation.
Periodontal Bone Loss Patients with a history of bone loss may benefit from additional information when developing or monitoring a periodontal treatment plan.

Periodontal Health and the Rest of the Body

Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition, and oral health does not exist in isolation from the rest of the body. Research has identified associations between periodontal disease and several systemic conditions, including diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

These associations do not mean that the presence of a particular oral bacterium proves that a patient will develop another disease, nor does saliva testing diagnose cardiovascular disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, or other medical conditions.

Our primary objective is to identify and manage periodontal disease in the mouth. Patients with significant medical risk factors should continue to work with their physicians and other healthcare providers for appropriate medical evaluation and management.

The collection itself is quick and non-invasive.

What Happens if My Test Shows High-Risk Periodontal Bacteria?

A positive saliva test does not automatically mean that every patient receives the same treatment. Recommendations depend on the bacterial findings, periodontal pocket depths, bleeding, bone loss, medical history, previous treatment, and other clinical factors.

Periodontal Cleaning or Deep Cleaning Scaling and root planing may be recommended when calculus, periodontal pockets, inflammation, or attachment loss indicate active periodontal disease.
Adjunctive Laser Therapy Laser treatment may be considered as an adjunct to mechanical periodontal therapy when clinically appropriate.
Antimicrobial Home Care Specialized rinses, oral probiotics, or other home-care products may be recommended depending on the patient’s findings.
Medication When Indicated Localized or systemic antimicrobial medication may be considered in selected cases when clinically appropriate.
Improved Home-Care Protocol Brushing, interdental cleaning, water flossing, and other home-care strategies can be adjusted according to the patient’s periodontal needs.
Periodontal Maintenance Patients with a history of periodontal disease often require more frequent professional maintenance than patients without periodontal disease.

Why We Sometimes Retest After Treatment

One advantage of bacterial saliva testing is that it gives us a measurable data point that can be compared over time.

After periodontal therapy and changes in home care, a follow-up test may show a different bacterial profile. We combine those results with changes in bleeding, pocket depths, inflammation, and other clinical findings to determine how well the periodontal condition is responding.

The goal is not simply to produce a different laboratory number. The goal is improved periodontal stability and a healthier oral environment.

Dr. Ha and our clinical team review the results alongside periodontal measurements, dental imaging, photographs, medical history, previous periodontal treatment, home-care habits, and the patient’s overall clinical presentation.

This allows us to create a periodontal treatment and maintenance plan based on more than a single measurement or generic protocol.

Can children or teenagers have saliva testing?
