Botox & Xeomin Post-Treatment Instructions

Botox & Xeomin Post-Treatment Instructions

Please follow these Botox post-treatment instructions after your appointment at Newport Beach Dental Studio. Most patients have little downtime, but a few simple precautions can help reduce irritation and allow the treatment area to settle.

These guidelines apply generally to botulinum toxin treatments such as BOTOX® and XEOMIN®. However, Dr. Ha may give you different instructions based on the muscles treated, your medical history, and whether your treatment was cosmetic or therapeutic.

Avoid Rubbing the Injection Sites For the rest of the day, avoid firm rubbing, massage, or repeated pressure directly over the treated areas.
Keep the Area Clean You may gently wash your face later in the day. Avoid aggressive scrubbing over the injection sites.
Delay Strenuous Exercise As a conservative precaution, avoid strenuous exercise for the remainder of the day. XEOMIN guidance recommends avoiding strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
Expect Gradual Results Botulinum toxin does not work instantly. Changes usually develop gradually over the days following treatment.

Can I Return to Normal Activities After Botox?

Usually, yes. Botulinum toxin treatment generally requires very little downtime.

You may walk, work, talk, eat, and continue most routine daily activities after leaving the office.

However, we recommend being gentle with the treated areas for the rest of the day. Avoid vigorous massage or facial treatments directly over the injection sites.

Exercise, Heat, Saunas & Hot Tubs

Older Botox aftercare instructions often claimed that exercise, sweating, or heat could prevent the toxin from “binding” or cause it to move into another muscle. Current evidence does not strongly support that explanation.

Still, it is reasonable to avoid strenuous exercise, very hot saunas, hot tubs, and intense heat exposure for the rest of the day, especially if you are prone to bruising or swelling.

XEOMIN’s current patient guidance specifically recommends avoiding strenuous exercise during the first 24 hours after treatment.

Can I Touch or Wash My Face?

Normal light contact is unlikely to be a problem. However, avoid repeatedly rubbing, pressing, or massaging the treated muscles immediately after your appointment.

You can gently cleanse your skin later in the day using clean hands. Pat the skin dry instead of scrubbing it.

You also do not need to worry about ordinary activities such as lightly touching your face or wearing normal loose-fitting clothing.

Can I Wear a Hat or Headband?

A normal loose-fitting hat is unlikely to move botulinum toxin after it has been injected.

However, avoid anything that places prolonged, firm pressure directly over a fresh injection area. This is especially reasonable when the forehead or temple region has been treated.

Do I Have to Stay Upright for 4 Hours?

The traditional recommendation to remain upright for exactly four hours after botulinum toxin treatment is common, but strong clinical evidence supporting this rule is limited.

Therefore, you do not need to panic if you briefly recline or bend over after your appointment.

However, avoid prolonged pressure or massage directly over newly treated areas. If Dr. Ha gives you a specific positioning instruction because of the muscles or treatment area involved, follow that individualized recommendation.

When Can I Wear Makeup?

If possible, give the small injection sites time to close before applying makeup.

When you do apply makeup, use clean hands, clean brushes or applicators, and avoid vigorous rubbing over the treated area.

If an injection site is still bleeding or visibly open, wait until it has stopped before applying products over it.

When Can I Have a Facial or Massage?

Avoid facial massage, aggressive skin manipulation, or another procedure that places significant pressure directly over the injected areas on the day of treatment.

If you are planning a facial, chemical peel, microneedling, laser treatment, massage, or another cosmetic procedure, ask us how long you should wait. The answer may depend on the treatment area and procedure.

When Will Botox or Xeomin Start Working?

Botulinum toxin takes time to change muscle activity. Therefore, do not judge your final result on the first few days.

First 24 Hours
Small bumps, mild redness, tenderness, or minor bruising can occur around injection sites. These effects generally settle quickly.
Days 1–7
Many patients begin noticing a change in muscle activity during the first several days. XEOMIN commonly begins showing effects within approximately 2–7 days.
Weeks 1–2
The treatment continues to develop. Differences between the two sides can sometimes be more noticeable during this transition period before the result settles.
Weeks 2–4
Dr. Ha can better assess the overall response. Timing varies depending on whether treatment involved facial expression muscles, masseters, temporalis muscles, or another therapeutic area.

When Should I Schedule My Follow-Up?

A follow-up is especially useful after your first treatment, when treating a new area, or when botulinum toxin is being used therapeutically for jaw-muscle or facial pain.

For many facial treatments, a review around two weeks allows Dr. Ha to evaluate early symmetry and muscle response.

However, a two-week visit does not automatically mean that more toxin should be added. Additional treatment should be based on the original dose, area treated, clinical response, product used, and appropriate safety interval.

How Often Should Botox or Xeomin Be Repeated?

There is no single maintenance schedule that is right for every patient.

For cosmetic BOTOX treatments, results may last up to approximately four months, and the manufacturer states that treatments should be spaced at least 90 days apart. XEOMIN results may also last up to about four months for many patients.

However, therapeutic treatment of the masseter, temporalis, or other muscles may follow a different schedule. Therefore, repeat injections should be based on your response and clinical need rather than automatically scheduling treatment every three months.

What Is Normal After Botulinum Toxin Treatment?

  • Mild tenderness at an injection site
  • Small areas of redness
  • Minor swelling or a temporary raised bump
  • Bruising
  • A mild headache
  • Temporary changes in the strength of the treated muscle
  • A gradual rather than immediate treatment effect

When Should I Seek Medical Attention?

BOTOX and XEOMIN carry an FDA boxed warning because, in rare situations, botulinum toxin effects can spread beyond the injection site.

Seek prompt medical attention if you develop:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Difficulty speaking clearly
  • Significant generalized muscle weakness
  • Severe or unexpected vision changes
  • Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as wheezing, widespread hives, or swelling associated with breathing difficulty

These symptoms can occur hours to weeks after treatment and should not be ignored.

Frequently Asked Questions About Botox Aftercare

Can I exercise after Botox?

We recommend avoiding strenuous exercise for the rest of the day. XEOMIN’s current patient guidance recommends avoiding strenuous exercise for 24 hours.

Can I lie down after Botox?

The traditional four-hour upright rule is not strongly supported by clinical evidence. Briefly reclining is unlikely to ruin your treatment. However, avoid firm pressure or massage over newly treated areas.

Can I wash my face after Botox?

Yes. Gently cleanse the skin later in the day using clean hands. Avoid aggressive rubbing or massage over the injection areas.

Can I wear makeup after Botox?

Once the small injection sites are no longer bleeding, makeup can generally be applied gently with clean hands or applicators. Avoid rubbing the area.

Can heat make Botox stop working?

There is not good evidence that normal warmth or briefly raising your body temperature makes botulinum toxin ineffective. Still, avoiding extreme heat and strenuous exercise immediately after treatment is a reasonable conservative precaution.

When will I see results?

Many patients notice early changes during the first several days. However, the final response develops gradually and depends on the product, dose, muscles treated, and treatment goal.

Do I need a two-week touch-up?

Not automatically. A follow-up visit can be useful to evaluate your response, but additional injections should only be performed when clinically appropriate.

How often should I get Botox or Xeomin?

Treatment frequency varies. Many cosmetic treatments last several months, but repeat treatment should be individualized rather than automatically scheduled every three months.

What if one side looks different during the first week?

Botulinum toxin does not always take effect at exactly the same rate in every muscle. Therefore, allow the treatment time to develop before judging the final symmetry.
