Post-Operative Care Instructions After Dental Extraction
1. Bleeding:
- Expect some oozing or bleeding for the first 24 hours after the extraction.
- To control bleeding, place a clean gauze pad over the extraction site and apply firm, continuous pressure for 30-45 minutes.
- If bleeding persists, replace the gauze pad with a fresh one and continue applying pressure.
- Avoid rinsing or spitting forcefully, as this can dislodge the blood clot and prolong bleeding.
- If bleeding persists despite these measures, contact our office immediately for further instructions.
2. Pain Management:
- Take prescribed pain medication as directed by your dentist or follow over-the-counter pain relief recommendations.
- Apply an ice pack to the outside of your face in the area of the extraction site to reduce swelling and alleviate discomfort. Use for 10-15 minutes at a time, with at least 10-minute breaks in between.
- Avoid aspirin-containing medications, as they can increase bleeding.
3. Swelling:
- Swelling is common after dental extractions and may peak within 48-72 hours post-surgery.
- To minimize swelling, apply ice packs intermittently to the affected area during the first 24 hours.
- Keep your head elevated while resting to reduce swelling.
4. Oral Hygiene:
- Avoid brushing, flossing, or rinsing the extraction site for the first 24 hours to allow proper blood clot formation.
- After 24 hours, gently rinse your mouth with warm saltwater (1/2 teaspoon of salt dissolved in a cup of warm water) after meals and before bedtime.
- Resume brushing and flossing the other areas of your mouth the day after surgery, being careful to avoid the extraction site.
5. Diet:
- Stick to soft or liquid foods for the first 24-48 hours post-extraction.
- Avoid hot, spicy, or hard foods that may irritate the extraction site.
- Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid using straws, as suction can dislodge blood clots and prolong healing.
6. Activity:
- Rest and avoid strenuous activities for the first 24 hours after surgery.
- Limit physical activity and avoid bending over, lifting heavy objects, or engaging in vigorous exercise during the initial stages of healing.
7. Follow-Up:
- Attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your dentist to monitor healing progress and remove sutures if necessary.
- Contact our office if you experience severe or worsening pain, excessive bleeding, persistent swelling, or any other concerns.
8. Smoking and Alcohol:
- Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption for at least 72 hours after surgery, as they can delay healing and increase the risk of complications.
9. Medications:
- Take any prescribed antibiotics as directed to prevent infection.
- If you experience any adverse reactions to medications, such as rash, nausea, or difficulty breathing, discontinue use and seek medical attention immediately.
10. Healing Timeline:
- Healing time varies depending on the complexity of the extraction and individual factors. Typically, the extraction site should heal within 1-2 weeks.
