The Patient’s Concerns
This patient came to Newport Beach Dental Studio with several concerns about her upper front teeth. Over the years, the teeth had become visibly worn and shortened, reducing how much of her smile showed when she spoke and smiled.
This was particularly important to her because she speaks in front of people professionally and wanted greater tooth display and a stronger smile presence during conversation.
She was also unhappy with the color of her teeth. Gingival recession had contributed to visible dark spaces between several teeth, commonly referred to as black triangles.
In addition, the pretreatment photographs demonstrated variations in tooth angulation and alignment. The objective was therefore much more comprehensive than simply making the teeth whiter.

Why Layered E.max Veneers?
Eight layered E.max porcelain veneers were selected because this case required changes in several dimensions at the same time: color, tooth length, angulation, facial contour, symmetry and interproximal form.
The layered ceramic approach allowed the restorations to be completed in shade BL2-MT while incorporating variations in translucency and surface character so the result could remain visually dimensional rather than flat or monochromatic.
Unlike whitening alone, porcelain veneers also allowed us to redesign the visible proportions of the teeth and restore length that had been lost through years of wear.
Addressing the Black Triangles
Gingival recession can expose more of the spaces between adjacent teeth, creating dark triangular areas near the gumline.
Porcelain veneers do not regenerate lost gingival tissue. Instead, the interproximal contours of the restorations can be carefully designed to reduce the visible spaces while working within the patient’s existing periodontal anatomy.
In this case, modifying those contours helped create a more continuous transition between the anterior teeth and significantly reduced the appearance of the black triangles.

Analyzing the Smile Design
Restoring Tooth Length
Years of wear had shortened the upper anterior teeth and reduced their prominence within the smile. Increasing the incisal length restored stronger proportions and increased the amount of tooth visible during smiling and speech.
Correcting Tooth Angulation
The pretreatment photographs demonstrate differences in the inclination of the anterior teeth. The veneer design allowed the facial contours and incisal positions to be reorganized so the teeth appear more upright and harmonious relative to one another.
Improving the Smile Line
Restoring the incisal length helped create a more continuous relationship across the anterior teeth. The final smile demonstrates improved visual flow from tooth to tooth and a stronger relationship between the upper incisal edges and the curvature of the lower lip.
Improving Symmetry & Proportion
The final restorations establish more consistent width-to-length relationships across the anterior teeth. The central incisors have stronger visual dominance, while the lateral incisors and canines transition more smoothly through the smile.
A Brighter Shade With Dimension
The final shade was BL2-MT. Although a brighter color was important to the patient, the transformation was not based on color alone. Tooth length, contour, angulation and interproximal design contributed substantially to the overall result.

02 — Veneer Preparation
Eight upper teeth were prepared for layered E.max porcelain veneers. The preparation appointment required approximately three hours.
The restorative design was planned to increase tooth length, improve angulation, modify interproximal contours and create the brighter appearance desired by the patient.
03 — Final Veneer Delivery
The eight definitive layered E.max veneers in shade BL2-MT were evaluated and delivered. The bonding and delivery appointment required approximately three hours.

Why Tooth Length Matters Beyond Photographs
Tooth length affects more than the appearance of a posed photograph. As anterior teeth wear and shorten, less of the upper teeth may become visible during both smiling and normal speech.
Because this patient regularly speaks in front of others professionally, restoring appropriate anterior tooth length was particularly meaningful. The treatment was designed to increase tooth presence within the smile while maintaining proportions appropriate for her facial and dental anatomy.
The Final Result
The final eight layered E.max veneers produced a comprehensive smile transformation rather than simply changing tooth color.
The teeth appear longer, brighter and more evenly positioned. Their axial inclinations are more consistent, the visible black-triangle spaces have been significantly reduced, and the anterior smile demonstrates improved symmetry and continuity.
For this patient, restoring tooth length also increased tooth display during smiling and speech — an important component of treatment given how frequently she communicates in front of others.
